The latest annual bird report from the Glamorgan Bird Club has been published. It is the 50th report for our region, and the 3rd under the guidance of the Glamorgan Rarities Committee.
The Eastern Glamorgan Bird Report No 50 (2011) is presented in a new B5 format and contains 108 pages reviewing the birding year in our region.
The bulk of the report is taken up by the species accounts, commentating on the fortunes of resident, migrant and rare birds observed during the year. Rare bird enthusiasts will note that Black Stork was recorded in the county for the first time. Readers from Norfolk or Lancashire will be left unimpressed with our second highest count ever for Pink-footed Goose – 14. An all-time high of 36 occupied Peregrine territories perhaps helps redress the balance.
Also included are a county ringing report along with accounts from Kenfig NNR, Flatholm and Cardiff Bay highlighting species and numbers caught. An obituary for Dave Bull, a well-known and popular ringer is included too. Other features are a report on the year’s weather, migrant dates, BTO news and an historical account of reports, recorders and key documents published over the last 50 years.
Line drawings and photographs showcase some of the talented local birders we have in our region. Amongst others are summer plumaged Black-necked Grebe (rare in our county), winter Slavonian Grebe and of course, Short-eared Owls which over-wintered in numbers in 2011.
The Eastern Glamorgan Bird Report is free to all members of the Glamorgan Bird Club.
