Garden BirdWatch (GBW) is all about getting involved. It’s about taking an interest in your garden wildlife and helping us collect information which reveals a great deal about the way in which birds use our gardens and to monitor their changing fortunes. As our open countryside is being constantly ‘squeezed’ by development, the importance of gardens as valuable habitats for wildlife is becoming increasingly obvious.

All you need to take part is a garden and a little bit of time each week to carry out the recording. You don’t have to provide food for birds and your garden doesn’t have to be big. All types of garden are welcome, as are all types of Garden BirdWatchers.

How much time you devote to the project is up to you, all that we ask is that you are consistent in your efforts from one week to the next. If you can’t do the count in a particular week then that doesn’t matter either. More information about how to become involved can be found at the bottom of this page.

Skill level: Suitable for anyone with access to a garden.

Local GardenBirdwatch Results

Here are the most commonly reported birds from gardens within the unitary authorities covered by the BTO East Glamorgan region. We currently have 169 people registered for this survey locally, but unfortunately there aren’t yet sufficient GBW recorders in Merthyr to be able to produce an meaningful Top 10 for that area. The figures in the right hand columns are the percentage reporting rate for each species.
